Why Only One Certificate?

Why only one certificate for multi-stone engagement rings? This is something I get asked on a regular basis. Take for example the multiple princess cut diamond engagement ring R1D013 with the channel set shoulder diamonds (a much loved design that never fails to win any heart.) This design holds a central Princess cut diamonds, that is usually GIA certified, sometimes IGI certified, with a much larger diamond to the outer 1.5mm Princess cut diamonds (10 x shoulder diamonds in total) on each shoulder. We only certify the one diamond at the centre. Why? Well, the reason is simple. A diamond grading certificate produced for a larger, better diamond, (we are talking 0.30cts upwards here and above J colour and SI2 clarity) is a much smaller proportion of the cost of the diamond itself, unlike the outer stones. In fact, a diamond grading certificate produced on the outer diamonds (a true diamond report should be produced for each single stone, as opposed to a blanket report on the set) is likely to cost more than the diamonds themselves! Since the diamonds are so small, these are usually uncertified, but matched to an equivalent colour and quality to the central diamond. The most important diamond in the set, that carries the higher value of the stones, is the diamond that is certified for consumer reassurance. GIA being most notable for this, and nicely proportioned to ensure that a suitable fit for the appropriate setting is selected.

Why Such A Difference?

Across the world, there are an enormous range of diamond grading laboratories. Many are legitimate institutions, others are not. Certain worldwide laboratories are deemed more acceptable than others, but not being mentioned here does not mean that other unmentioned laboratories are by any means unrepeatable. Within the diamond industry, most dealers do consider some certification above others. Even on a reputable certificate however, there are still features of the diamond that will reduce the value.

Let us first look at some of the main key differences that sets one laboratory out from another. Firstly there is the issue of clarity. Some laboratories cleverly grade only at 10 x magnification which makes a profound difference with the value of the diamond. GIA, IGI, HRD, AGS and many of the more renowned laboratories tend to grade under high powered microscopic magnification around 300 X by comparison, which means that a GIA graded G colour SI1 clarity diamond, could in effect achieve a VS2 clarity when submitted to an alternative laboratory. Colour grading can also be more lenient.

Another question that is often repeated is with regards to the cut grade. GIA tends to apply this where required to round brilliant cut diamonds, and not fancy shaped diamonds. Some other laboratories do however apply such a cut grade to fancy shape diamonds, but not GIA.

GIA sets itself out from many other institutions by being a non profit making organisation with worldwide educational and research facilities. For many, the logistics of GIA certification of new diamonds polished means that other laboratories, closer at hand are more convenient for report production and return shipping, and for European merchants, IGI provide an ideal solution for shipping to Antwerp with a fairly speedy turn-around time. For retailers and consumers, many of the diamonds in circulation are traded already certified and a finite range that is ever changing means that certain shaped, sizes, specifications etc can be very hard to find. After all, diamonds do not grow on trees and some combinations may just not be possible. This however is where a varied pool of laboratory services, and stock comes into its own. If we were to depend upon diamonds graded by the chosen few laboratories, this would severely inhibit the availability of many shapes, sizes, colours and clarities. Although we should be cautious about standards, sometimes choice and variation is largely a benefit.

Six Claw Twist Rings

Twist rings are best described as those rings that incorporate either a twist within the setting itself or within the shoulders of the ring most typically. Four claw twist designs are most prevalent, but it is possible to achieve a higher number of claws to create a more secure setting, especially when a larger diamond is being held within the ring. Choosing a specific style of engagement rings can be a task in iteslf. Let us forget for one moment the range of sizes, colours, clarities, and metals available and look at the style itself. Certain designs can in themselves be seen as retro. Styles that reflect a romantic era when elaborate detail was much sought after. Subtantially sized diamond rings will require a substantial budget, but there is no reason why you cannot find a suitable sized diamond for your particular requirements. Furthermore, by choosing a certified diamond, you will gain a degree of reassurance in your purchased. Not all diamonds are certified and it is a common misconception amongst shoppers that they are. A diamond is only certified if it has been submitted to a diamond grading laboratory and a report is produced on that particular stone. Such certificates are less commonplace for smaller diamonds (under 0.33cts) and for diamonds of a lower colour and clarity (below G/H SI1.) These style of engagement ring settings rely on small metal claws to hold the diamond. These can vary in number offering endless design possibilities in many subtle variations. Selecting Your Diamond

Which shape? What size? What colour? What Clarity? Should I request a very good cut?

These are all questions you might wonder about if you are looking at diamond engagement rings. Unless you have done some reading around on the subject, the chances are that you will be a little bit confused by some of these terms. This is where we will try to clarify a few things for you.

In terms of the shape of diamond, engagement rings are made to accommodate many shapes and it is basically a matter of personal preference. Some shapes can be less expensive than round brilliant cuts. Princess cuts are a little less than rounds due to less wastage when the diamonds are cut from the rough. Brilliant cuts tend to create more "fire" due to the faceting. Emerald cuts, Carre cuts, baguette cuts are all examples of step cuts, where the facets run as the name suggests in a step like fashion.

The other factors such as diamond carat weight, colour, clarity and how well cut the diamond is, all make up the "Four C's" of diamond value. The combination of these factors determine the price of the stone. Colour and cut are very noticeable due to the effect they have on the diamond. It is advisable if possible to keep to a white colour (H-I or above) and SI1 clarity or above. Engagement rings with such diamonds are white and will be clear to the naked eye, without spending a fortune on the whitest, cleanest stone. Many diamonds above 0.40cts will come with a diamond certificate, a report detailing these individual characteristics of your diamond.

Try to seek the advice of a diamond specialist. Do your research, ask questions. It is not always a good idea to seek out the very cheapest. Some companies offer a much more involved service which adds that extra reassurance when looking at engagement rings.

Simple Contemporary Engagement Rings

There is nothing quite like a simple contemporary setting to show off the diamond. Many engagement rings focus on the maximum amount of diamonds on a small ring. By keeping it simple, the focus will be on the single, simlpy set diamond. This was the motivation for the Tiffany Setting which has inspired ring designers for generations.

Whether it is a four or six claw setting, the less detail, the better sometimes. Having said this, certain designs combine simplicity with styling. Such designs include crossover detail.

Asscher Cut Engagement Rings

The Asscher cut, is probably most similar to the emerald cut. If you consider the Asscher cut to be a square version of the emerald cut, you will have the idea. It has a smaller table and larger steps than an Emerald cut. The elaborate cut corners are faceted as a significant detail of this fancy cut. The crown is higher than an emerald cut along with a deeper pavilion. A well cut Asscher will provide significant brilliance. Most Asschers are modern cut, however, many finely cut antique diamonds are in circulation. Some of the older cut Asschers are amongst the most beautiful examples.

If you are particularly interested in Asscher cut diamonds, any square ring style with regular straight claws will be suitable for an Asscher cut.

Other alternatives in square cut fancy shapes include princess cut engagement rings, brilliant cut for significant fire, and the Carre cut engagement rings, similar to the Asscher but with sharp intact corners.

Chief amongst the timeless classic styles of engagement rings has to be the Tiffany style solitaire. Born out of a desire for a simple setting, this type of engagement ring draws the attention towards the diamond, reducing much of the detail down to an elegant mimimum. Certain stylistic details give this style of engagement ring its timeless appearance. Six claws that offer security sit beautifully between two shoulders that narrow perfectly towards the diamond. Oval Engagement Rings

Oval diamonds are often overlooked when it comes to looking at engagement rings. Oval diamonds are a beautiful cut of diamond. They combine flavours of both the traditional round and the creativity of the fancy shaped diamonds. The more scientific name is the "oval modified brilliant," based upon its shape and twist on the design of the more traditional round brilliant cut. Oval engagement rings containing an oval diamond, owe their origin to Lazare Kaplan who created the shape in the early 1960's.

Oval engagement rings can vary enormously in their model. A length to width ratio of 1.5:1 is considered as a pleasing proportion generally. The more rounded shapes can often appear not oval enough.

In terms of faceting, oval diamonds generally tend to exhibit 56 facets, which is the typical number for this type of diamond.

In terms of the setting for these diamonds, sometimes a very simple style can be the most flattering, which is also true for the round brilliant cut. A wide variety of designs are, however, available which use the oval set lengthways across the finger or set laterally along the finger. Princess Cut Engagement Rings

Simple Engagement Rings - Look No Claws!

For those of you who prefer engagement rings without the claws to hold the diamond in place, there are many designs, often simple in design that are available to you. The bezel or rub-over setting relies on the metal being pushed over the very edge of the diamond and provides a very secure setting. Other designs do this part of the way around the diamond. Some give the appearance of a tension setting, but in actual fact, the diamond is securely held with the setting, not relying on the tension of the ring at all. The above image is an example of such an engagement ring set with a round brilliant cut diamond.

How big will my diamond be?

When you are buying an engagement ring on the internet, you are often buying the ring at a very keen price. It is, however, hard to judge how large a particular diamond is. It is often a good idea to refer to a diamond size chart which will provide an idea of the mm size of the stone. This will provide a good reference for you. There is no general rule for the relationship of mm size to weight and it varies greatly from one cut to another.

For example :

Round Brilliant 0.50cts = 5mm typically

Princess Cut 0.50cts = 4.5mm typically

Provided your diamond is close to the typical size for your diamond weight, the proportions should decent. If you purchase a 1ct diamond and it has a diameter of 5.75mm, then it will be small and cut very thickly, and will handly light poorly. It should in actual fact be closer to 6.5mm typically.

The Classic Four Claw Setting

Many people look for very simple classic styles of engagement rings that are both modern but which will not date over the years. Another requirement is that the ring will show the diamond off as much as possible, with the maximum amount of light entering into the stone. This is all achieved by the setting, that is, the part of the ring that holds the diamond in place.

Why four claws? This is the least amount of small claws required to keep the diamond secure. Some 3 claw engagement rings exist, but these often have larger claws that reach further around the diamond. The simple four claw setting keeps the design very simple, working on the theme of simplicity.

Sometimes the results of something simple are far greater and this is perfect proof. The high setting shows off the diamond, and the tapering shoulders that narrow at the setting just complement the design. It is available in a wide range of sizes, colours and clarities, and also metals, allowing the ring to be sculpted to fit into any budget.

Diamond Pendants

Diamond pendants are perhaps one of the easiest pieces of diamond jewellery to buy. Once you have decided on the style and the metal (both subject to personal preference) there is no real size to consider (well not on the same level of difficulty as finding a ring size when it's for a surprise.) It is more a case of considering the length the pendant will hang at. Diamond pendants come with a range of chain lengths. For a fairly slim neck, a 16" chain will sit fairly high up between the collar bones usually, whereas an 18" chain will sit on the upper part of the chest. 20" chains will usually sit the pendant lower on the mid chest area.

Slider diamond pendants have become fashionable in recent years. With this type of pendant there is no bale (the part the chain runs through usually.) Instead, the chain slides through the pendant body itself, hence the name. Some beautiful examples of these types of diamond pendants can be found, with such styles as the bezel setting or rub-over setting as it is sometimes called.

Fancy shaped diamonds are now becoming extremely popular for diamond rings allowing that extra bit of originality to be included within each piece of jewellery. Certified Engagement Rings

For those of you looking at high quality engagement rings with a particular desire for certified diamonds, read on. You are no doubt looking at 18ct White or Yellow Gold or even Platinum, famous for its natural whiteness. The diamond however is a different ball game altogether. Your reassurance comes from the diamond certificate but beware, since low quality diamonds can be certified also. Catalogues displaying rings as "certified," do nothing to provide reassurance if no quality is specified.

Try to consider a diamond that is white and is fairly clean. Any diamond below J in colour will start to display a yellowish tint. Also, a diamond below P1 (I1) clarity will have marks quite visible to the naked eye. Engagement rings with diamonds above H colour and SI clarity will look white and clean without you needing to pay a premium as you would for much higher colours and clarities. If you can stretch your budget further, you can go for larger stones, cleaner stones or whiter stones, or even a combination.
